What Is Tobacco & Where Is Tobacco Grown?

What is tobacco?

How tobacco plants have come to tickle our tastebuds.

Believe it or not, there are more than 70 varieties of tobacco, or should we say Nicotianatabacum. A member of the nightshade family, it’s a plant characterized by its simple oval leaves, thick hairy stems, and large clusters of flowers—which vary from red and pink to cream andwhite. And it’s the leaves that give off a rich, earthy aroma when first picked and dried.

Made from a blend of three types of high quality tobacco

Originally from the Americas, tobacco is a crop that grows best in rich soil and full sun. Today, the answer to the question “Where is tobacco from?” is all over the globe. In contrast to its tropical origins, tobacco is now grown as far north as Norway and all the way to Australia.

You might not know that historians believe tobacco leaves were first smoked more than 12,300 years ago. Today, tobacco is associated with products such as cigarettes, tobacco sticks, and tobacco pouches.

How does Ploom use what is in tobacco?

At JTI, we've created a modern tobacco experience with our EVO for Ploom sticks. We select tobacco from over 30 countries to achieve a blend that delivers a rich tobacco taste from the start to the finish of your Ploom AURA experience.

For example, dark fire-cured tobacco leaves from Africa are chosen for their roasted nuttiness. Meanwhile, Mediterranean plants bring subtle spicy and woody notes with a mellow, slightly sour character, while Asian flue-cured tobacco leaves add spicy and slightly woody notes.

Modern tobacco experience - great tobacco taste

How long does tobacco last?

The growing period of tobacco plants is surprisingly short. With EVO for Ploom sticks, tobacco seedlings are cultivated for around 60 days before planting, and the mature leaves are harvested two to four months later.  That’s when the crop is cured and packed before being safely aged in our warehouse for anything from a few months to several years.

What is smokeless tobacco, and what are the different flavor?

In the context of a story that stretches back thousands of years, the history of heated tobacco is relatively brief. And like any innovation, there are many ways to describe it—smokeless tobacco is just one of them.

At JTI, our focus is to deliver the best possible high-quality experience with heated tobacco. That’s why we developed Ploom AURA and EVO for Ploom sticks—to give you true tobacco taste with no smoke, no ash and less tobacco smell.

Our signature ActivBlend is contained in every EVO for Ploom stick. Made from a blend of three types of high-quality tobacco, it also includes added tobacco lamina for a sensational taste experience.

Along the way from seed to stick, the tobacco is cut to achieve the best possible surface area for heating. Moisture and flavorings are then added so you can explore taste notes that range from dark, smoky, and spicy to more complex undertones.

Choose from Bronze, Burgundy, Gold, Ice Cold Menthol, Purple Option, Ruby Option, or Baize Option. Explore the skillfully developed combination of tobacco flavor and intensity offered by Ploom AURA and EVO for Ploom sticks.
